ONLINE LEARNER'S PERMIT AVAILABLE AT RMV

RMV UPDATE AS OF JUNE 19, 2020

Supervised Driving Privileges Prior to Learner's Permit

THIS OPTION FOR AN SDR WILL BE AVAILABLE BY MONDAY, JUNE 22, 2020

Eligible teenagers turning 16 between March 1 and June 30 2020 will soon be able to apply for a new “Supervised Driving Receipt” (SDR) prior to obtaining an appointment for their learner's permit. This new option provides the ability for eligible teenagers to take a learner's permit test online without coming into an RMV Service Center first to have a learner's permit application processed.

Eligible teenagers will be required to have parental/guardian consent to apply and take their learner's permit test online. Printed at home after successfully passing the learner's permit test, an SDR will carry strict requirements, allowing eligible students to practice driving only in Massachusetts with a Massachusetts driver who is at least 21 years old and has held a valid license for more than one year.

The SDR allows an eligible teenager to complete the 40 hours of supervised driving and required six hours of driving observation. Additionally, eligible teenagers can complete the mandatory 12 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a certified driving education school. SDRs will be valid 90 days from the date of issuance and will only be issued through August 12, 2020.

The granting of a SDR does DOES NOT COUNT
toward the requirement for six months of clean driving to qualify for a road test. A valid learner's permit is necessary to start the required six months of driving. GET YOUR LEARNER'S PERMIT ASAP AS THE 6 MONTHS DOES NOT START TO QUALIFY YOU FOR THE CLEAN DRIVING RECORD.

THIS OPTION FOR AN SDR WILL BE AVAILABLE BY MONDAY, JUNE 22, 2020

Effective immediately, 16-year-old applicants with birthdays from January 1 through May 31 will be allowed to make service center reservations to apply for learner’s permits through the online “Apply for a Learner’s Permit” reservation transaction at the RMV Online Service Center. Currently, reservations are limited to 16-year-olds with March and April birthdays. This change will allow more eligible applicants to make learner’s permit reservations.
